Hello, Tuesday friends!
Since I was taking a little blogging sabbatical for the first half of last year, and because this blog serves as my photo album these days, I’m going to take the next several days to go back and cover a few highlights from each month that I missed posting last year.
In January, we celebrated Bonnie and Melvin’s (Joel’s parents) 50th anniversary! Their anniversary is actually in February, but we went ahead and celebrated in late January due to the lovely fact that the happy couple would be on a cruise the week of their anniversary date. We asked them how they would like to mark the occasion (reception, guests list, etc) and their request was for a quiet dinner with their children and grandchildren.
Joel’s sister and her husband, Melannie and Greg, hosted and provided a scrumptious steak and shrimp main dish, while the rest of us filled in with sides and dessert. Melannie had her home decorated elegantly with shimmering golds and soft whites. She gets her natural knack for party-hosting from her mother!
After dinner–and boy, I wish I had photos of the food!–we gathered in the living room for a couple of games. Bonnie is the queen of party games so we knew we needed a game or two that evening! We put Abigail in charge of coming up with something Bonnie and Melvin would enjoy. We also presented them with a money tree (plant), adorned with varying bills, to provide for their “tips and miscellaneous expenditures” on their anniversary cruise.
The Gurrrlzzzz! Abigail, Emily, Madeline, and Cassidy! Cousins and sweet friends.
I think after 50 years of a devoted marriage, they deserve a little cake!
We ended the evening eating our cake while watching a special 50th anniversary video my brother-in-law prepared. It was so sweet. We went from laughing to crying to laughing. What a special family night!
And I have to include this cute little side note. The same weekend we had my in-law’s 50th anniversary dinner and I decorated their cake, our family also attended my friend’s (Lisa) 50th birthday! Now her girls are friends with my girls, and her middle daughter, Sydney, loves to bake. And this girl is a good little baker too! She asked if I could help her decorate a cake for her mom’s birthday. How neat, TWO “50th” cakes in one weekend! So we got all sneaky and Sydney and her sisters came over the morning of the party for Sydney’s piping lesson. I let her look through a book and pick out the design she wanted. After some instruction from me, this girl took off and piped her mom the prettiest 3-shades-of-pink ribbon cake! Didn’t she do a great job! There was a little cake leftover that all the girls got to playing around with and decided it would be Lisa’s *smash cake*.
Also, in January, we celebrated Wilton’s 6th birthday! We started the morning with gifts and breakfast.
He opted for a family day at the zoo and dinner out. It was a cold January day at the zoo! Brrr. But so much fun!
Our zoo has an incredible wildlife museum with a remarkable display of preserved animals. It is so interesting every time we visit.
We might have encountered a couple of ferocious beasts!
The zoo always entertains!
Wilton’s birthday restaurant of choice was “the place where you can throw your peanut shells on the floor” (his words). He didn’t care a thing about what food they served on the kids menu. He just wanted to enjoy the childhood pleasure of being able to be messy at the table!
Well, there’s January for you! Next I’ll be back with some February highlights.
